Immersive 360 video projection with kinetic sculptural components.

Videography, sound, and post-production editing: Natalie Hunter

Our bodies are capsules of sensory information, matter, and memory. Sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch combine to inform our experience of the world around us. To disrupt, amplify, or mediate one of these senses can powerfully affect our perception of space, time, and memory. Gardens are carefully cultivated extensions of our consciousness, our memories, and our bodies. We tend to gardens like we tend to people; caring for living things with touch and sunlight, water, and soil to grow. We need gardens as a food source but find solace in the act of tending and caring.

Between Moment and Matter merges stream-of-consciousness video capture and editing strategies along with immersive 360 degree projection to study the construct of the garden in relation to time, space and the body. A heavily explored subject in art history, and a metaphor for our human need to cultivate relationships with the natural world around us, gardens are sensory spaces. Impermanent, unfixed, vulnerable, ever changing living things in constant flux. In Between Moment and Matter light, form, time, and sound work together to awaken our senses through mediated experiences of the natural world. Looking at the garden as a social construct, I explore immaterial concepts such as time, light, space, memory, embodiment, the senses, motion, air, and breath through imagery and sound. Light projection is used as an immersive tool to activate space and the body, and magnify unseen phenomena in the natural world. Light is a key ingredient in making images. It is how we see colour and form, and also how we see and experience physical objects around us. But it is also a destroyer of materials, our skin, and our eyes. The sun is both volatile and nourishing. Just as sunlight illuminates the cells in leaves, light activates my moving images within space; casting latent images in 360 projection on the walls, floor, and spaces they exist in. Floating, breathing, and curving around the room, these unfixed moving images allow us to become aware of the slowness of time and its infinite qualities.
