Lens, Lens (2020-23) is a set of durational kinetic sculptures that respond to time, architecture and light. Illuminated by moving sunlight, or static artificial light, these sculptural forms throw latent imagery and shadows on surrounding surfaces of the spaces they occupy. The curved circle shapes and interior overlaping curves reference the leaf mechanism that opens and closes the aperture of a camera. Reflecting on the floor or the surrounding wall, traced shadows create a doubling of each form; creating the appearance of a second lens. The curved overlapping apertures become a portals in which to look through; reframing space in the subtleties of colour and texture of hand applied films and curved wood. In these ethereal and durational sculptures I explore material sensibilities such as weightlessness, transparency, opacity, time, balance, and motion. Lens, Lens (2020-23) are related to my photographs in that they rely on the material staples of photography - light and time - to be experienced. Ultimately these sculptures are studies on the passage of time, the ephemeral qualities of light, how it affects familiar spaces, the body, and our perception of time, and what this does to memory and immediate experience.
