Unique artwork.

To make Mirror Window, a memory of glass and stone (2023), Natalie Hunter photographed the same window in a familiar architectural setting at different times in one day using 120mm film and a collection of hand made colour filters. Rolling the film through the camera on each exposure produced elongated double exposures that layered the images of the window over time; much like a reflection through glass or the mirror space of the camera. Printed on transparent film and installed away from the wall on a hand made armature, the imagery in Mirror Window, a memory of glass and stone reflects, bends, and produces latent images on the walls and surfaces surrounding the work. We aren’t sure what the true image is; the image, its mirror copy, or the latent images on the wall. Depending on the time of day, the angle of the sun, or a viewer’s perspective Mirror Window, a memory of glass and stone appears different each time it is viewed. Creating a durational encounter. The subtle elements of architectural brick work, paving stones, reflective glass, and steel siding overlaid with details of plant life blooming in spring suggest an exterior from a mid-twentieth century industrial building caught in the flux of time. In this way, Mirror Window, a memory of glass and stone calls attention to the slow passage of light through time and the ever-unfolding, fluid experiences we share in the spaces in which we dwell.
